Becoming Your Own Mother

By Tanya Carroll Richardson

An exploration of tools for nurturing ourselves! Traditionally we think of “mother” as a care-taking force that’s outside us, but in this class we’ll discuss cultivating that force within us, to mother ourselves, as an act of deep self-love and self-care.

Many people have complex relationships with parental figures. A positive mothering figure in your life may have passed away, or perhaps you experienced a lack of healthy mothering from guardians. We also have complex relationships with being parents, like coping when children leave the nest or living up to a child’s expectations. It’s common to experience trauma as a parent, like becoming estranged from a child or having children pass away. Those who’ve never been parents in a traditional sense can extend that nurturing energy outward to family, friends, and professional projects.

So often we simply struggle to know how to mother ourselves if that was never modeled. In this class, we’ll find relief, unconditional love, and gentle power in turning our nurturing impulses toward ourselves in practical, actionable ways. We’ll also look at how to receive more nurturing from others, recognizing when and how they can offer it.

Despite our individual life experiences and genders, we all have an inner mother who longs to nurture us!
