Narcissism in the Psychedelic Ecosystem

In this presentation, Hannah McLane MD, MA, MPH and Emma Knighton MA, LMHC will review the concept of narcissism, and how it relates to unhealthy and cult-like organizations, how to recognize it in yourself, and why it is related to boundary violations in psychedelics. They will review why people with narcissistic tendencies may be drawn to psychedelics, and how to recognize this in others. They will go over how parts work - as it pertains to relational psychoanalysis and also Internal Family Systems - is always important to keep in mind when talking about personality disorders and personality traits. Finally, they will review the concept of countertransference and how to develop healthy skills when relating to clients.
đź“·Dr. Hannah McLane is a physician, psychoanalyst, and entrepreneur. She is the Founder of SoundMind Institute, a Philadelphia and Oregon-based psychedelic facilitator training and research initiative aimed at bringing ethics, equity, and innovation to the psychedelic ecosystem. She conducts research on cognitive diversity, psychedelic science, ethics, PTSD, and emerging alternative therapies for mental health issues. She is the clinical director of the SoundMind Center, the first psychedelic therapy center in the Philadelphia region, and training director for training and retreat offerings in Philadelphia, Oregon, and Costa Rica. She attended McGill University and holds graduate degrees from Temple University (MA, Communication Sciences, Spanish Concentration), Brown University (MD, Doctor of Medicine, Contemplative Studies Concentration), and Harvard School of Public Health (MPH, Global health and Bioethics).
đź“·Emma Knighton (she/they) is a white, queer, able-bodied femme. She is a somatic trauma therapist, psychedelic integration therapist, and embodied organizer. In their clinical work, Emma specializes in working with folks with complex PTSD from childhood abandonment, neglect, and sexual abuse. Her approach is grounded in queer, consent, and feminist theories and she works from an anti-oppression lens. They offer organizational training in trauma-informed care (TIC), promoting the integration of TIC principles into clinical care, employee relations, and corporate structure. Emma teaches classes on integrating kink-based consent practices into psychedelic-assisted therapy. Emma is passionate about embodied community and believes that psychedelic healthcare and policy/regulation must come from those who practice and those who benefit. She believes that integration is a life-long practice, and strives to live life with integrated spirit and body.
