Dojo: The Politics of Arabic Type Design with Nadine Chahine
By TypeEd
The Typography Dojo is a place where we come together to explore the kata (techniques) in the practice of type and typography with training from design Sensei. Join us to learn from the masters.
Power. Politics. Identity. Typefaces embody the unspoken messages in our words, which is why it's more important than ever that there is plurality for the voices of the Arabic culture. Nadine's talk will argue that there's a place for both the classical and the modern lettering in the contemporary language and presents her exploration of Arabic type design through key projects and milestones.
Dr. Nadine Chahine is an award-winning Lebanese type designer. She has an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK, and a PhD from Leiden University, The Netherlands. She has numerous awards including two Awards for Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club in New York in 2008 and 2011. Her typefaces include: Frutiger Arabic, Neue Helvetica Arabic, Univers Next Arabic, Palatino Arabic, and Koufiya.
