Join us for an evening celebrating the contributions of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Doctors Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell to cultural and medical history. As well as how major pediatric medical advances were largely influenced by women doctors like the Blackwells.

Dr. Perri Klass will be in conversation with Kimberly Hamlin discussing these extraordinary 19th Century Cincinnati women, and Klass’ latest book, The Best Medicine: How Science and Public Health Gave Children a Future.

The Best Medicine explores how major pediatric medical advances were largely influenced by women doctors and nurses, and transformed parenting, doctoring, and the way we live.

Perri Klass is Professor of Journalism and Pediatrics at New York University and Co-Director of NYU Florence. She attended Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital, Boston. She has written extensively about medicine, children, literacy, and knitting, as a columnist for The New York Times, The Atlantic, and as the author of several books.

Mercantile Library Board Member Kimberly Hamlin is the J&B Lewis Professor of History; Global and Intercultural Studies, at Miami University. She is the author of From Eve to Evolution: Darwin, Science, and Women's Rights in Gilded Age America; and Free Thinker: Sex, Suffrage, and the Extraordinary Life of Helen Hamilton Gardener. Professor Hamlin is the co-founder of the Allgood-McLean Women You Should Know Series.
