Micro Pilots: Grassroots Led Direct Cash Demonstrations

By The BIG Conference

Basic income pilots don’t have to be massive efforts led by elected leaders or large foundations. Small, micro-pilots have sprung up across the country, led by individuals who feel compelled to help their community members with direct cash. Hear from two grassroots community members who have led such efforts and get inspired!
Panelists:
Anna Young, Community-Led Basic Income Project
I grew up in Maplewood, NJ and currently live in Sunnyside, Queens. I serve as a Middle School Special Educator at KIPP NYC Public Schools and studied Political Theory at McGill University. My thinking about UBI was originally inspired by Andrew Yang’s presidential campaign, the writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Stockton, CA Basic Income Pilot under Mayor Michael Tubbs, as well as the many incredible mutual aid programs facilitated around the world. The idea for this specific project came spring of 2020 while quarantining at my family home. Essex County is unique in that it is a dense racially-diverse urban-suburban area. The tools to combat race-based poverty all exist within a 10-mile radius. While our political institutions may fail us, as neighbors we have the power to ensure the health of our communities. As my mom always said when she needed the dishes washed: Community service begins at home.
Sylvester Ani Jr.,The Love We Don’t See, Sunrise LA
My name is Sylvester Ani Jr., I was born in Inglewood, California, but was raised in Cerritos. I later went on to earn my degree in psychology at Azusa Pacific University & currently serve as a full-time caregiver for people within the Autism community. I founded my nonprofit organization, The Love We Don’t See, with a mission to highlight the love within our community and commitment towards investing in marginalized communities to promote education and upward economic mobility. I am a congressional candidate for the 38th District in California in 2022.
