"Meet Me There" is a monthly intergenerational poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction experience curated by trans/genderqueer poet and sound artist Samuel Ace. Writers exploring genre and gender boundaries will be a special focus of this series. This event usually takes place on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30pm ET. Some months our readings will take place at Charis Books with an option to watch virtually, and some months the event will be fully virtual, so be sure to check the listing!

December's featured poets are Niki Herd and Victoria Chang in celebration of their collections, The Stuff of Hollywood and With My Back to the World: Poems

Niki Herd is the author of the poetry collections The Stuff of Hollywood and The Language of Shedding Skin, as well as the chapbook _____ , don’t you weep. She coedited with Meg Day Laura Hershey: On the Life & Work of an American Master. Herd’s poetry, essays, and criticism appear in the Academy of American Poets (Poem-a-Day), Poetry Daily, New England Review, Salon, and This Is the Honey: An Anthology of Contemporary Black Poets, among other journals and anthologies. Her work has been supported by MacDowell, Ucross, Bread Loaf, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Newberry Library, and Cave Canem. Herd has taught at the University of Houston and Washington University in St. Louis. She lives in Lancaster, PA where she teaches at Franklin & Marshall College.

In The Stuff of Hollywood, the camera is both a witness of truths and an instrument capturing the line between real and engineered violence.

The Stuff of Hollywood is a meditation on the pervasiveness of violence in America. In this book-length poem, Niki Herd relies on various modes--images, prose, lyric and documentary poems--to reflect upon the quotidian nature of gun culture, police killings, and political unrest. A busy Waffle House, a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, inside an Uber on a Chicago street, readers are placed in various "film" locations and watch as America becomes a character in its own absurd movie. In one section, excerpted language from the continuity script of D.W. Griffith's 1915 The Birth of a Nation is juxtaposed with text from the January 6 congressional hearings, suggesting a fragile line between real and engineered brutality. Herd interrogates empire and the ways in which violence is consumed and normalized. The Stuff of Hollywood is an elegy for a country that never existed beyond the screen.

Victoria Chang’s latest book of poems, With My Back to the World was published in 2024 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux and Corsair Books in the U.K., and was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Poetry. Her most recent book of poetry, The Trees Witness Everything was published by Copper Canyon Press and Corsair Books in the U.K. in 2022, and was named one of the Best Books of 2022 by the New Yorker and The Guardian.

A new collection of poetry inspired by the work of Agnes Martin, exploring topics of feminism, art, depression, and grief, by the author of the prizewinning collection Obit.

Yesterday I slung my depression on my back and went to the museum. I only asked four attendants where the Agnes painting was and the fifth one knew. I walked into the room and saw it right away. From afar, it was a large white square.

With My Back to the World engages with the paintings and writings of Agnes Martin, the celebrated abstract artist, in ways that open up new modes of expression, expanding the scope of what art, poetry, and the human mind can do. Filled with surprise and insight, wit and profundity, the book explores the nature of the self, of existence, life and death, grief and depression, time and space. Strikingly original, fluidly strange, Victoria Chang’s new collection is a book that speaks to how we see and are seen.
