The Lost Prince of the ANC: The Life and Times of Jabulani Nobleman 'Mzala'Nxumalo by Mandla Radebe
Please join Professor Mandla Radebe, in conversation with Ronnie Kasrils, on Tuesday, 4 April, 18:00.
Radebe’s The Lost Prince of the ANC: The Life and Times of Jabulani Nobleman 'Mzala' Nxumalo is the first comprehensive biography of the South African revolutionary known as Mzala. In this extraordinary book, Radebe traces Mzala’s story from birth to his untimely death in 1991, at the age of 35, just after his return to South Africa.
Radebe’s richly researched and revelatory biography is the story, too, of the radical tradition of the liberation movement, which flourished during its underground days. It fills a gap in our history and asks us difficult questions about the road taken by the ANC and its alliance partners since 1994.
As Kasrils and Radebe interrogate the life of a critical thinker, writer and questioner who had much to offer the post-apartheid South Africa, they will explore whether insights from Mzala’s life could open a door for the reader to imagine politics and society anew.
‘This is a radical, free-flowing, thought-provoking, poignant and wry tribute to a revolutionary prince of the people, inducing laughter and tears – a manifest celebration of an extraordinary life.’ – Ronnie Kasrils
Mandla J. Radebe is Associate Professor for Strategic Communication and Director of the Centre for Data and Digital Communications at the University of Johannesburg.
Ronnie Kasrils is a former government minister and author of Armed & Dangerous, The Sunday Times Award-winning, The Unlikely Secret Agent, A Simple Man and Catching Tadpoles.
