Welcome to this next online workshop where we will be painting Marshfield Church.  It is a beautiful old English church with lovely stone walls.

We will try and capture the feeling of an early summer's day, the bright sunny sky, the grassy meadow in front of the church and foreground shadows.

Painting a scene like this beautiful church comes with a few interesting challenges for us to solve together.  Here is what we need to watch out for when we put brush to paper.

Getting the church perspective right - The angles of the church walls and the high tower can be tricky.  We need to make sure the building looks solid and stands up straight on the grass.

Simplifying the busy graveyard - There are so many old gravestones hidden in the tall grass.  If we paint every single one, the picture will look too messy, so we must choose just a few to paint and leave the rest simple.

Mixing the right summer greens - The grass and trees are very bright green.  It is easy for these greens to look too artificial or dark, so we need to mix our greens carefully to keep that lovely warm summer feeling.

Controlling the light and shadows - The sun is shining from the side, creating strong dark shadows on the church walls.  We want to capture the contrast between the warm, sunny stone and the cool, blue shadow areas.

Painting the complicated windows - The church has beautiful, detailed stone windows.  We do not want to get stuck painting every tiny line, so we need to use a loose style to suggest the detail without overworking it.

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level. It is a demonstration in Watercolor. I go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using. The commentary is in English, and I speak slowly for any attendees where English is not your first language.

All you need to watch and take part is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary.  Crowdcast is not like Zoom. Nobody can see you or hear you.  You just see and hear me and it's really EASY!

What you will need (apart from paper and water)

A large and medium size mop brush. Small brush for detail work. A small flat brush might be used.

Your normal palette of colours (I mainly use, neutral tint, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, viridian green, spring green (or a bright green!), cobalt green, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, lavender, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, light red and a cadmium yellow, white paint for highlights.  I also sometimes use quinacridone gold). You don't need to use these colours.  Please don't buy anything special for this workshop.  Just use your usual things!
