Improve your watercolor, have a couple of hours fun painting along with Tim Wilmot, and...get a critique!

I am very happy to announce my next public workshop coming up this July.  We are going to paint a wonderful coastal scene together.  The painting is all about dramatic waves crashing against dark rocks.

It is a fantastic subject with great contrast.  We have the bright white foam of the sea against the dark cliffs, and some lovely white buildings with palm trees under a blue sky.

This live workshop is perfect for amateur painters who want to practice painting moving water and creating strong light in their work.  I will guide you step by step in a friendly, relaxed way.

Here is a quick list of the main things you should focus on when painting this scene 

First, think about the planning.  You need to decide where to place your horizon and how much space to give the big dark rocks in the foreground compared to the sky.

Next, focus on leaving the white paper.  The bright white foam of the crashing waves is the star of the show.  We'll need to map out these shapes early on so you do not accidentally paint over them.

Then, we will work on values.  The dark volcanic rocks need to look very strong and heavy.  

After that, we'll practice your soft and hard edges.  The buildings and the sea wall in the distance need clean, sharp edges to look solid.  The spray from the waves can have softer, looser edges to show movement.

Finally, simplify the details.  Do not try to paint every single rock or window.  Just capture the overall feeling of the rugged coast, the bright sunlight on the walls, and the energy of the sea.

This online workshop is suitable for painters of any level. It is a demonstration in Watercolor. I go at a slow pace and describe with commentary what I am doing and the techniques I am using. The commentary is in English, and I speak slowly for any attendees where English is not your first language.

All you need to watch and take part is a good/reliable internet connection, and a headphone or PC speakers to hear my audio commentary.  Crowdcast is not like Zoom. Nobody can see you or hear you.  You just see and hear me and it's really EASY!

What you will need (apart from paper and water)

A large and medium size mop brush. Small brush for detail work. A small flat brush might be used.

Your normal palette of colours (I mainly use, neutral tint, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, viridian green, spring green (or a bright green!), cobalt green, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, lavender, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, light red and a cadmium yellow, white paint for highlights.  I also sometimes use quinacridone gold). You don't need to use these colours.  Please don't buy anything special for this workshop.  Just use your usual things!
