The DDGC Germanists for Palestine Research Cooperative and the Feminists in German Studies BDS Working Group warmly invite you join us for a virtual series of events in collaboration with groundbreaking scholars Anna Younes and Hanna Al-Taher: Intifada Talks: Colonization, Uprisings, and Revolutionary Thought.

Intifada Talks highlights anti-imperial thought reaching beyond the conventional boundaries of German Studies. Each virtual roundtable or panel event will bring together writers, researchers, artists, and/or filmmakers from around the world to tackle issues of empire and resistance from Turtle Island to Congo, documenting both colonial continuities and transnational strategies of solidarity. Panels will focus on topics such as Palestinian liberation and the Black radical tradition, settler-colonialism and Indigeneity, anti-imperialism and state violence, counter-terrorism and counter-insurgencies, international human rights law, and more.

Please join us on May 10 at 9:00 PST / 12:00 EST / 16:00 GMT / 18:00 CET / 20:00 AST & PSST for the second event in our series on the topic of Indigeneity and Resistance from Turtle Island to Palestine. We will welcome back filmmaker Clifton Ariwakehte Nicholas, director of A Red Road to Palestine, who will be in conversation with Steven Salaita and Alexander Aviña, two scholars whose work on Indigenous sovereignty, armed resistance to imperialism, and decolonization will help us to situate solidarity with and from Palestine in a global context of anti-imperialist theory and praxis.

Clifton Ariwakehte Nicholas is a Kanien’kehá:ka filmmaker and the director of A Red Road to Palestine. He was part of the resistance to the 1990 Oka Crisis, standing against the military blockade of his community by the Canadian army. His previous independent documentaries include Elsipogtog: No Fracking Way! and Karistatsi Onienre: The Iron Snake, which exposes the dangers of the Énergie Est pipeline project. He is now collaborating with Franklin López on two documentaries that confront the impacts of colonization and the ongoing resistance to it.

Steven Salaita is professor and chair of the department of English and Comparative Literature at the American University in Cairo. He is a prolific author known for his comparative approach to Native American and Palestinian studies. He has published several books, including Inter/Nationalism: Decolonizing Native America and Palestine, Uncivil Rites: Palestine and the Limits of Academic Freedom, the award-winning Anti-Arab Racism in the USA: Where It Comes from and What It Means for Politics, and two recent novels.

Alexander Aviña is an associate professor of Latin American history in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University. He is the author of the award-winning book Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside, and most recently of the essay “Killing Machine: How Mexican and US States of Exception Turned Revolutionaries and Migrants into Bare Life.” He works on twentieth-century Mexico, with an emphasis on revolutionary movements, the Mexican Left, state violence and terrorism, immigration, and the history of narcotics production and trafficking.
