An Introduction to the Internet of Things

By TPL Programs

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been disruptively transforming our lives by changing the way we accomplish many day to day activities. Some are obvious while others less so. IoT effects range from how a person orders pizza and calls for a taxi to complex functionalities in an aircraft or autonomous vehicles are performed. This not-so-technical presentation will introduce the IoT by explaining the basic architecture of an IoT system. Then it will briefly delve into the underlying wireless communications aspects including a brief outline of the upcoming 5G networks. In addition, it will introduce self-sustaining (energy harvesting) IoT systems by highlighting a few case studies such as IoT in Autonomous Vehicles, Aerospace Industry, Power Grid and Smart Homes. Presented by Xavier Fernando, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University. Dr. Fernando has co-authored over 200 research articles, two books (one translated to Mandarin) and holds a few patents and non-disclosure agreements.
