Indigenous Technologies Across Turtle Island

When you think of Indigenous people, what kind of technology comes to mind? This talk uses multimedia and audience engagement to uncover the technologies used by Indigenous people across Turtle Island. Honouring the traditions of story, the presenters will explain how observation contributed to Indigenous knowledge and how architectural systems were constructed based on this information. They will also explore Métis contributions to our current transportation system via the Red River cart, and the relationships between the natural world and Indigenous people.
Presented by Alejandro Mayoral-Banos and Danielle Paradis of the Indigenous Friends Association.
Alejandro is Indigenous-Latin with ten years of experience in fundraising and project management. Alejandro is an Indigenous academic and activist, who is currently working with organization in Canada and Mexico deploying participatory and community-driven ICT projects by/with/for Indigenous peoples. He is the creator and founder of the Indigenous Friends Association. Alejandro has a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture at York University and has plenty of experience leading, collaborating and participating in various projects around Indigeneity, ICT4D and volunteerism in Mexico, Canada, Peru, Chile and Bolivia.
Danielle is a Métis educator and writer from Treaty 6. She has over ten year's experience in leadership and educational development. She is a passionate advocate for Indigenizing education, and merging technology with traditional knowledge. She holds a Master of Arts in Learning and Technology from Royal Roads University where her researched focused on open education. She also teaches reporting on BIPOC communities and advanced journalism at MacEwan University and Humber College.
