Homeopathy for Women in their 40s and 50s
Midlife is the time in our lives between younger and older adulthood, and it's a multi-faceted period of transition for women.
During their 40s and 50s many, if not most, women will experience multiple social, psychological and biological issues, among them the natural processes of perimenopause, menopause and ageing.
Women in midlife are often searching for balance while coping with a wide range of stressors, including the needs of their relationships and family, work-related challenges, disappointment, loss, bereavement and financial worries.
Many of these occur at the same time, are not temporary, and take a great deal of mental, emotional and physical energy for on-going management.
Their physical health, and ability to cope, depends upon past experiences in childhood and adolescence.
Research studies show that 'adverse childhood experiences' (ACE) are closely linked to chronic health problems in midlife.
Lara Briden (naturopathic doctor) describes perimenopause and the early years of menopause as a 'critical window' for health. By this she means a sensitive period during which time small health problems could, if not addresses, amplify into larger and more permanent health problems later in life.
This 'critical window' is also a 'window of opportunity' to make small changes that can pay huge dividends for future health.
Women in their 40s and 50s are a huge demographic and I'm sure that like me, you treat many women who come for issues related to 'perimenopause' and 'menopause'. The symptoms are familiar to all of us, but are often the 'tip of the iceberg' though.
Many women find themselves with other issues alongside their 'hormonal symptoms' that could include:
- high or low blood pressure
- insulin resistance
- cholesterol imbalance
- early signs of heart disease
- arthritis
There may also be a recent or past history of:
- acid reflux
- migraine
- thyroid dysfunction
- fibroids
Depending on their history, they may already be taking prescribed medication:
- sleeping pills
- anti-depressants
- blood pressure medication
- thyroid medication
- statins
- contraception
- HRT
This is before you start to look at over-the-counter medication:
- painkillers
- cold/flu medicines
- acid reflux medicine
- anti-histamines
These all build up layers of toxicity that need clearing in order to restore normal biological function.
As we know, homeopathy can help with many types of mental, emotional and physical issues, even in complex cases.
But, where do you start?
- detox?
- therapeutics?
- trauma remedies?
- all of the above?

Background notes
There are encouraging signs of change in attitudes and understanding around the complex issues faced by women during midlife.
'Menopause power' is driven partly through the internet, with many products available now for the 'Menopause Market'.
There have been many new books on perimenopause and menopause published in the last few years, along with the emergence of podcasts on emerging topics and trends in all matters menopause-related.
As homeopaths we have always seen women with a wide range of symptoms related to menopause. These include:
- heavy periods
- light periods
- longer/shorter cycles
- breast pain
- hot flashes
- night sweats
- mood swings
- insomnia
- depression
- brain fog
- fibroids
Balancing hormones and resolving these symptoms are not all we are required to do.
Our homeopathic tools are also needed to address past, present or on-going issues of stress, grief and trauma, plus years or decades of synthetic hormones and other medication.
As practitioners we need to understand all of these areas in order to feel confident navigating them with our clients.
We want to be non-judgmental and give appropriate support as well as appropriate treatment protocols.
This is the context for the webinar.
