BCBA Ethics CEU The Paradigm Shift Miss a Discussion Around Arthur et al. 2023
By The Happy Medium Approach
There was a time when the best available technology to watch a moving was on a real (no not a Facebook real LOL). The technology evolved to VHS tapes to DVDs to now streaming on any device within reach with a battery charge. If people did not make an active choice to take a chance and move forward with a change, we would not have Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube TV. We would still be carting around portable DVD players or heading to blockbuster to get the latest hit. Humans used to think the sun revolved around the earth! The choice to set out into the unknown, all the chances, and the immense change that followed for humanity after the discovery that the earth actually revolves around the sun, set science in a new direction. Creativity, ingenuity, and willingness sets the stage for evolution in many areas of humanity.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a relatively new science (when compared to astronomy, medicine, and mathematics) with a very young population of practicing providers (45.64% are 25-34 years old). ABA is under fire from many directions. Two prominent areas include Ableism and Neurodiversity. Arthur, et. al., 2023 published a paper to “evaluate and discuss concerns from members of the neurodiversity movement that ABA based interventions for autistics/individuals diagnosed with ASD are ableist.” (p. 129) and “to provide a response to criticisms to behavioral intervention and continue dissemination efforts of professionals and organizations in productive ways.” (p. 138). As an entire field, it is imperative to understand the ethical implications not only of the small picture criticisms surrounding ableism and neurodiversity, but also the big picture as it relates to the human experience within multiple contexts.
Please join Alexandra, Kathryn, Sera, Julie and Rosalie a group composed of Autistics, SLPs and BCBAs for a kind and collaborative ethical discussion after reading Arthur et. al., 2023, “Concerns about Ableism in Applied Behavior Analysis: An Evaluation and Recommendations”
Attendees will:
- Identify ethical considerations of addressing only small picture criticism
- Discuss the ethical implications for Ablism across coexisting systems (Education, Work, OT, SLP, PT, Daycare, ABA) that are often supported contexts.
- Identify ways to ethically, make a choice to take a chance to change the way you as an individual BCBA practice in response to big picture criticisms surrounding neurodiversity and ableism.
