Please join us on Friday October 2, 2026 for Super Cyber Friday.

Our topic of discussion will be “Hacking Your Career Growth Mistakes: An hour of critical thinking about learning from the past to build your cybersecurity future.”

Joining David Spark, producer of CISO Series for this discussion will be:

Janet Heins, former CISO, ChenMed and author of Go Ahead… Ask For It!

Mathew Biby, director of cybersecurity, TixTrack

In preparation for our discussion, think about the following:

What's the difference between a career decision that was wrong and a career decision that just didn't work out? Do security leaders conflate those two things in ways that distort the lessons they take from them?

When we talk about "career mistakes," are we mostly measuring against the outcome or against the quality of the decision at the time we made it?

Is there a version of the survivorship bias problem at work in CISO career advice, where the people giving advice only made it, and can't see the decisions that looked identical but didn't?

At what point does staying deeply technical stop being an asset and start being a way of avoiding leadership discomfort?

Where's the line between building a reputation and playing politics?

What's the career cost of being indispensable in your current role? Is being too good at the job you have a reliable way to not get the job you want?

Is the high CISO churn rate a supply problem, a fit problem, or evidence that most organizations don't actually know how to use a CISO?

What's the career mistake you've seen smart, capable people make repeatedly, even after watching someone else make it first?

It all starts at 1 PM Eastern/10 AM Pacific. At the end of the hour [2 PM Eastern/11 AM Pacific] we'll switch gears to our meetup where everyone will get a chance to chat face to face.

We play games during the show, and some players can win prizes! Players in the US can receive prizes as gifts; those outside the US can win gift cards.

Super Cyber Fridays are open discussions where all viewers and listeners are welcome to become participants. Before the scheduled event, connect your webcam and microphone (avoid Bluetooth). During the discussion, if you have a question or comment, let it be known in the chat room and our producer will do his best to get as many of you into the conversation. We look forward to you joining us.
