Getting Away With Fraud: The Lansdowne Portraits of George Washington
By The Redwood Library & Athenæum
Dorinda Evans, Professor Emerita at Emory University will present "Getting Away With Fraud: The Lansdowne Portraits of George Washington."
To the uninformed eye, the Redwood full-length portrait of Washington seems to be by Gilbert Stuart or Jane Stuart. But it's a fraud by the British artist William Winstanley who managed to sell copies as originals. This is the story of how he got away with it. His most famous copy, only recently unmasked, is at the White House.
