Profs and Pints Online presents: “George Washington’s Legacies,” with Denver Brunsman, associate professor of history at George Washington University, lecturer at Mount Vernon, and co-author of Leading Change: George Washington and Establishing the Presidency.
[This talk will remain available in recorded form at the link given here for tickets and access. ]
When George Washington passed away in December 1799, he left an extensive legacy for America and the world. On this Presidents’ Day—officially the federal observance of George Washington’s Birthday—learn all that America’s first president imparted to us. This will be the fourth consecutive Presidents Day talk by historian Denver Brunsman, and in watching him speak you’ll understand why he is a Profs and Pints fan favorite.
Washington’s legacies include foundational institutions, such as the presidency, the U.S. Army, and the capital city of Washington, D.C. Yet, his influence also touches complicated issues, including America’s racial divisions and questions over who should participate in the democratic process.
Washington’s legacies also extend to the international realm, where his example helped to inspire revolutions and independence movements in Europe and Latin America. They’re almost too numerous to count, covering everything from patterns in American education to how we domesticate farm animals.
In what has become a Presidents’ Day tradition, Professor Brunsman will close his lecture with historic toasts and odes to America’s first president. This is a holiday celebration not to be missed. Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!
