Frontiers: What Can Organizations Learn from Olympic Athletes?

By Behavioral Scientist

We are happy to announce a new conversation series, “Frontiers,” where we’ll host conversations with people who are pushing the boundaries of behavioral science. The series will feature behavioral science perspectives on contemporary issues, cutting edge approaches on applying behavioral science, and conversations on behavioral science craft.

The series will officially launch for donors and paying subscribers in the New Year, but we’re previewing the format with an exciting first guest, high performance psychologist Michael Gervais. With Gervais, we’ll ask: What can organizations learn from Olympic athletes?

Gervais has worked with gold medalists, Super Bowl winners, and world record holders. He’s also worked with leaders in businesses and nonprofits, the sciences and the arts. He’s the author of the book The First Rule of Mastery, which details his approach to high performance, and the podcast Finding Mastery. There, you can find conversations on high performance with guests like Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Abby Wambach, World Cup winner and record goal scorer for the U.S. Women’s national soccer team.

Through his consultancy, Gervais and his team bring a unique approach to high performance within organizations. The team is made up of both organizational psychologists and olympic athletes who combine their skill sets to help organizations improve their culture, leadership, and successfully navigate change.

In our conversation, we’ll ask Gervais about his work with elite athletes, how lessons from high performance in sports translate for organizations, and how we can work to fulfill our potential, even if we aren’t Olympians.
