"Introduction to Country Finger-style Guitar" with Robert Montgomery
*Suggested donation of $15
This workshop will present an introduction to finger-style guitar, focusing on the basic picking patterns and right hand techniques that distinguish the styles played by such finger-style pioneers as Merle Travis and Sam McGee.
Robert Montgomery is a multi-instrumentalist and singer from Moulton, Alabama. His first introduction to old-time country music came as a young child listening to the Grand Ole Opry and to old recordings belonging to his father. Playing the guitar since the age of 12, his style was foundationally influenced early on by thumb-picking styles played by Sam McGee, Merle Travis, and Doc Watson. The 2004 National Old-Time Banjo Champion, he has toured and recorded professionally for over a decade, playing banjo and guitar with David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, Alan Sibley & the Magnolia Ramblers, Phillip Steinmetz & his Sunny Tennesseans, The Cumberland Highlanders, Leroy Troy, and others. He is currently featured weekly on the RFD-TV program "The Bluegrass Trail".
