Festival of Ideas: Bradley Garrett

By Bristol Ideas

Urban explorer and cultural geographer Bradley Garrett discusses the global and rapidly growing movement of 'prepping' for social and environmental collapse, or 'Doomsday'. What makes people want to run away and invest in bunkers? What kind of world would they emerge to? Should we all become preppers to face the crises now and in the future? Why can’t we devote this time, energy and money to making the world better? From the 'dread merchants' hustling safe spaces in the American mid-West to eco-fortresses in Thailand, from geoscrapers to armoured mobile bunkers, he brings our age of disquiet and dread into new, sharp focus. The bunker, Garrett argues, is all around us: in malls, airports, gated communities, the vehicles we drive. Most of all, it's in our minds.
Bunker: Building for the End Times is published by Allen Lane. Buy a copy from our friends at Waterstones.
