The Evolution of Data Visualization
By Manuel Lima
“History is not the past; it’s the present. We carry our history with us. We are our history.” —James Baldwin
Human beings have been involved in the visual representation of information for thousands of years. You'll get to know the key milestones in the history of data visualization, from the first maps, diagrams, and illustrations to current day computer-driven executions. We will delve into the three main periods that comprise the long evolution of the discipline, respectively: Middle Ages, Golden Age, and Modern Age.
-
Middle Ages
- This was the genesis of information design and data visualization. Inundated by vast amounts of information coming from the ancient world, medieval scholars made a critical investment in diagrammatic representation.
Golden Age
- Driven by the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, we will look at many of the key projects and figures that made what's considered by many as the golden age of information graphics.
Modern Age
- You'll learn some of the main drivers for the current outburst of interest for data visualization, as well as get acquainted with some of its main themes/executions.
