Case Study Investigation (CSI): Paraplanners - Pensions and divorce case study with Ascentric

By Paraplanners' Assembly

Welcome to CSI: Paraplanners

This is our new format which we are calling Case Study Investigations or, wait for it, CSI: Paraplanners for short. We're planning to use this format from time to time to crack detailed technical paraplanner case studies.
Ahead of the day, a team of investigators made up of paraplanners and an expert have met to dissect and discuss a case study to show:
- How others approach this problem - The technical solutions they come up with - The workings - their thinking, the clues they look for along the way, what they weigh up and what supporting information they seek
Then it's time to leave no stone unturned as we invite you to put on your own detective's hat...
On Wednesday 30 June you'll become part of the investigation team. Ahead of Wednesday, you'll have swotted up on the case study - which is here. Then live on the day, whilst watching how the team solved our case study, you'll listen as our chief investigator, Richard Allum and expert summarise the investigation, ask questions and share how you'd delve into the details. All this with the aim of solving this case (study) through the collective the power of as many paraplanners as possible.

What's in the magnifying glass this time around?

Our crack team came together to investigate a pensions and divorce case study:
  • Where to start with divorce cases
  • The options for dealing with pensions
  • Dealing with other assets
  • Working out a suitable solution for both parties
  • What other financial actions should be looked at

What do you need to do?

1. Book your spot using the 'save your spot' button
2. Read the case study before the day (it is here), making a note of any questions or points you might have
3. Tune in live on Wednesday 30 June at 1-2pm to help our team crack the case

Meet the crack team that's on the case:
  • Richard Allum - Founder of The Paraplanners (and manages to run a few paraplanner events, or something like that).
  • Alyson Brooker - Paraplanner at The Paraplanners. A graduate in Law from the University of Edinburgh, Alyson had originally planned to embark on a career practicing law but, despite achieving a Diploma in Legal Practice, she soon caught the paraplanning bug. Today, Alyson is a Chartered Financial Planner. Alyson’s background in law has particularly helped hone her skills in trusts, estate planning and general tax planning.
  • Les Cameron - Head of Technical, Prudential UK. Les leads Prudential's technical team. He is a fellow of the PFS, spending time reading, writing and speaking about pensions, tax and trusts to our internal stakeholders, press, financial advisers and paraplanners.
  • Susan Pringle - Director, MHA Henderson Loggie Financial Planning. Susan has been in the financial planning profession for over 30 years and worked with many different advisers but just three firms. Over that time, she’s been involved in constructing processes within the firms she’s worked with, been authorised to provide advice, specialised in pensions both individual and corporate. She’s always been part of a team, and since 1999 has been involved in the management side.
  • Caroline Singleton - Caroline is a Technical Specialist for North East IFA firm, Money Matters. Essex girl turned northern lass, she enjoys shopping, drinking coffee and talking all things finance.

Got a question? Try these answers on for size

How does this Online thing work?
Save your spot by clicking the button on the top right. It's free, the only thing you have to do is register an account.
On the day of the event just sign back in here. But, we'll also send a reminder email ten minutes before it starts.
On the tech side of things. Viewing the events on browsers such as Chrome or Firefox work best. Headphones are a good idea if you share an office, plus the ability to type so that you can ask questions via the chat feature.
What if I can't make it to the event?
Just sign-in and view a recording of the session whenever it suits you.
Can I ask questions?
Yes! As many as you can throw at our panel. Plus, if you can't make the event, book a spot and add a question beforehand, the panel will then answer it during the event.
Can I suggest a topic or be on the panel?
Absolutely, the more the merrier. Drop us an email.
Are there more Online events?
You bet your bottom dollar there are, and on lots of useful topics for paraplanners. Watch past and/or register for any upcoming events here.
There isn't an upcoming event listed, when will the next one be?
Sorry about that. We're just confirming the topics and putting together an A-Team panel for it. We do aim for every last Wednesday of the month, at lunchtime (1-2pm for most normal folk), so you can join in while eating your sandwich.
Sometimes we'll throw a curve ball and change the date. That's because we want to bring you AMAZING panel members, and they just can't make Wednesdays. It's as simple as that.
Actually, my question was on something else
Ooh, we like new questions. Just pop it in an email and send it on its merry way to here.
One last question, what do you do with my details when I sign up?
Crikey, another good question! We’ll use your details to keep you posted on our happenings. From time to time, this will include activities that our supporters are participating in that we think you’ll find interesting. We share information at an aggregate level with our supporters every now and then. Please see our Privacy Policy here for details of how we will process your personal information.
