Conversations for Clinicians #8: Mindful Self-Compassion

By Caring for Clinicians by Tend Health

Most of you have heard of mindfulness. All of you know about compassion. But what is this mindful self-compassion thing? We will briefly discuss the science of self-compassion and the common barriers to practicing self-compassion. We will offer simple yet powerful tools to meet yourself with compassion during difficult and trying times. We will practice ways of responding to challenging thoughts and emotions with kindness and understanding.
Mindful self-compassion allows us to move from inner critic to inner ally. We will work together to identify the day-to-day judgement we inflict on ourselves and start to practice softening the edges. We will review different modalities to check in with yourself, such as asking “Am I taking care of myself as I would care for a friend?” and “Am I speaking to myself as I would speak to a friend?” We will revisit how to answer the quintessential question we have been exploring throughout all of our sessions, “What do I most need right now?
Our task is not to seek for love,
but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself
that you have built against it.
