COBOL on Kubernetes
By IBM Developer
Since when did COBOL get cool again? The reality that COBOL still runs a significant amount of our world has been sorely exposed by the COVID-19 crisis. COBOL is at the root of Social Security, Veteran Affairs, state unemployment systems, ATM swipes, and many other critical applications.
With Kubernetes owning the mindshare of the next generation, and traditional applications are loosing engineering talent to things outside the datacenter. Interestingly enough though, this science experiment of running a simple COBOL application on Kubernetes shows off the power of Kubernetes, and how generic COBOL or any computer development language can run in an isolated containerize environment.
🎛 What you will learn
- An overview of Kubernetes and cloud-native application development
- How this project came together and why it's important to the real world today
- Why any developed application can run on a Kubernetes-powered compute platform
- How COBOL highlights the flexibility and capability of Kubernetes
- How to set privileges to secure your application properly
- An example of an ETL pipeline based on COBOL on Kubernetes
- Why there's no reason your language can't run on Kubernetes
👩‍💻 Who should attend?
Developers and DevOps practitioners who are curious about how today's COBOL and mainframes integrate into a modern environment.
