In this first session hosted by Gary Sutton, guest scientist (and Bay Cetology founder) Jared Towers will present details from a high seas research expedition in the southern South Atlantic which among other things, resulted in some unprecedented findings about the behavioural ecology of killer whales. His presentation based on his ICES Journal of Marine Science  publication "Movements and Dive Behaviour of a Toothfish-Depredating Killer and Sperm Whale"  will be followed by live Q&A with the audience.

Cetacean Sessions is a bi-weekly webinar series where we discuss impactful recently published scientific research on cetaceans with those conducting it around the world. Cetacean Sessions is informal, educational, interactive and geared towards those working with or interested in cetaceans.

Jared Towers’ work includes conservation-based studies on the behavioural ecology and abundance of cetacean populations using photo-identification and telemetry. He typically spends over 100 days on the water each year and since 2006 has conducted field research on Killer, Fin, Humpback, Grey, Minke and Blue Whales in the North Pacific Ocean and Killer, Sperm, Sei and Blue Whales in the South Atlantic and Southern Oceans. He currently curates several cetacean photo-identification datasets through Bay Cetology, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the MERS Marine Education and Research Society. Jared authors several peer-reviewed scientific papers per year, serves as a referee for a variety of academic journals, is a scientific advisor for two non-profit organizations and helps advise marine mammal research and policy initiatives in Canada and elsewhere. He currently lives on Cormorant Island, BC in the unceded traditional territory of the ‘Namgis First Nation.

Bay Cetology enables conservation and understanding of cetacean populations that are data deficient or threatened by climate change and human development. Our marine biologists and research technicians use various expertise to conduct field studies, analyze data, and communicate findings.
