Like a Brazen Wall: The Battle of Minden

The Seven Years War (1756-63) was a global conflict that saw fighting break out across North America, India and large swathes of Europe.
One of the greatest Allied victories of the war was the Battle of Minden (1759), where an Anglo-Hanoverian force of approximately 37,000 men defeated a 44,000-strong French army.
In this talk, Ewan Carmichael will set Minden in the broader context of the Seven Years War while also exploring the decisive moments of the battle. The failures and successes of the leaders on both sides will be examined, as well as the remarkable dedication of the soldiers who entered the battlefield. Ewan is intimately familiar with the local terrain and its features having lived near the area for three years.
Major General Ewan Carmichael CBE retired as Director General Army Medical Services in 2014, bringing an end to a long and distinguished career in the British Army.He was awarded an operational MBE for his role in Operation Granby, the liberation of Kuwait in 1991.Originally a dental surgeon, he commanded 19 (Airmobile) Field Ambulance and then set up 16 Air Assault Brigade’s medical regiment, 16 Close Support Medical Regiment. As Commander 2nd Medical Brigade, he was responsible for providing and training the Army’s field hospitals for both Iraq and Afghanistan.
