Confronting the Holocaust: Britain and the Belsen Trial, 1945

By National Army Museum

When British forces liberated the notorious Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in April 1945, it was the first time they had been confronted with the horrors of the Holocaust.
The Belsen Trial of 1945 was the first trial of Holocaust perpetrators in occupied Western Germany. It was conducted by a British military tribunal and included testimony from British soldiers involved in the liberation of the camp.
Join Dr Caroline Sharples as she discusses the trial and the challenges that faced the British forces as they worked to piece together what had happened at the concentration camp.
