A conversation about being counted out and answering anyway. Greg Vaughn was never the prospect everyone fawned over. Four teams drafted him before he signed. He came up in a small market as a power hitter who struck out a lot and hit for a low average, exactly the kind of player a team can talk itself into giving up on. The year before the best season of his life, a lot of people had him written off. Then in 1998 he hit 50 home runs in the summer the whole country was watching the long ball, went to the World Series, and won Comeback Player of the Year. And the reward for the best year of his career was a trade that same winter.
