All the Blood Involved in Love: Maya Marshall in conversation with Aurielle Marie

By Charis Books and More/Charis Circle

Charis welcomes Maya Marshall in conversation with Aurielle Marie for a celebration of All the Blood Involved in Love. All the Blood Involved in Love is an urgent and evocative collection--featuring complex and compelling poems about the choices we make surrounding home, freedom, healing, partnership, and family.
In a moment of critical struggle for reproductive justice, Maya Marshall's haunting debut meditates on womanhood--with and without motherhood. Traversing familial mythography with an unflinching seriousness, Marshall moves deftly between contemporary politics, the stakes of race and interracial partnership, and the monetary, mental, and physical costs of adopting or birthing a Black child.
Maya Marshall is the author of chapbook Secondhand and cofounder of underbelly, a journal on the practical magic of poetic revision. She has earned fellowships from MacDowell, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, Watering Hole, Community of Writers and Cave Canem. Marshall previously served as artist-in-residence at Northwestern University and as faculty for Loyola University. She is the 2021-2023 Creative Writing Fellow in Poetry at Emory University.
Aurielle Marie is a Black and queer essayist, poet, and cultural strategist hailing from the Deep South. A 2019 Ploughshares Emerging Writer award recipient, she’s received invitations to fellowships from many literary institutions, including Lambda Literary, VONA Voices, and Tin House. Her work is featured in TriQuarterly, Southeast Review, Black Warrior, and other journals. Aurielle Marie writes and speaks about Blackness, bodies, sex, and pop culture from a Black feminist lens.
