By DIESEL, A Bookstore

Join us on Wednesday, March 31st at 6:30pm for a virtual event with Alexis Landau and Lauren Fox as they discuss their novels, Those Who Are Saved and Send For Me.
With the release of her debut novel, The Empire of the Senses, Alexis Landau emerged as a talented new voice in historical fiction. Now she returns with Those Who Are Saved, a profoundly stirring tale about one mother’s impossible choice and her search for her daughter against the odds. Inspired by Los Angeles’ true history as a refuge for displaced European artists — including Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Otto Preminger, and Fritz Laing — this moving novel spans years and continents to deliver a rich, evocative meditation on motherhood, exile, the devastating effects of war, and the enduring power of love.
Send For Me, by Lauren Fox, is an achingly beautiful work of historical fiction that moves between Germany on the eve of World War II and present-day Wisconsin. First, there's Annelise, a dreamer who imagines her bright future at her parents' popular bakery in Feldenheim, Germany, even though there are rumors that anti-Jewish sentiment is on the rise. When the dangers grow close, Annelise and her husband are given the chance to leave for America, but they must go without her parents. Two generations later, in a small Midwestern city, Annelise's granddaughter, Clare, stumbles upon a trove of her grandmother's letters from Germany. When she sees the history of her family's sacrifices in a new light, she's suddenly faced with an impossible choice: the past, or her future.
Alexis Landau is a graduate of Vassar College and received an MFA from Emerson College and a PhD in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Southern California. She is the author of The Empire of the Senses and lives with her husband and two children in Los Angeles.
Lauren Fox, who earned her MFA from the University of Minnesota, is the author of the novels Days of Awe, Still Life with Husband, and Friends Like Us. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Marie Claire, Parenting, Psychology Today, The Rumpus, and Salon. She lives in Milwaukee with her husband and two daughters.
