In March 2021, the Chinese Canadian National Council reported 1,150 instances of anti-Asian racism in Canada in the previous 12 months, noting that misinformation and racist beliefs related to the pandemic contributed to this surge. The horrific act of violence, in which eight people were killed by a gunman in Georgia, six of which were Asian American women, is tied to sexism and fetishization that Asian women in particular are subjected to.

Panelists:
Sandra SG Wong (she/her) writes fiction across genres, including the cross-genre Lola Starke novels and Crescent City short stories. She has been a finalist for the Arthur Ellis Awards for Excellence in Canadian Crime Writing (Best First Novel and Best Short Story) and longlisted for the Whistler Independent Book Awards (Best Crime Fiction). She currently serves as National President of Sisters in Crime, a U.S.-based non-profit dedicated to equity in the crime writing community.
Linda Hoang is one of Alberta’s leading social media strategists. She is a popular blogger and social media content creator, an ethical influencer and passionate entrepreneur. Linda uses her online platform to support communities, inspire, and educate audiences on a range of topics including supporting local, BIPOC business owners, as well as Anti-Asian Hate initiatives.
Wing Kar Li was born in Hong Kong, and immigrated to Stony Plain, Alberta with her family at the age of 4. She has lived in Alberta ever since. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Lethbridge. Wing is passionate about raising awareness about racial justice and social equity issues.
Rajah Maggay is a community activist passionate about gender parity, anti-oppressive and anti-racist efforts. Rajah currently working as a research and policy advisor for a local city councillor. She is the Vice Chair of Research for ParityYEG and Co-Founder of a peer support group for racialized women in politics called Political DIVAS.
