Monkeypox in the Black Community: What you need to know

By Capital B

As of July 23, the Department of Health and Human Services has declared Monkeypox a public health emergency. As the rate of infection climbs throughout the country, some communities, including gay Americans and Black Americans, are being hit disproportionately hard without adequate access to care.
The slow response to Monkeypox has been coupled with misinformation, fear, and comparisons to past public health crises that left already vulnerable communities at the mercy of highly communicable diseases.
Join Capital B News on Thursday, August 18th at 5 p.m. ET for a conversation withDr. Sabrina Assoumou, an infectious disease physician at Boston Medical Center and Justin Smith, the director of the Campaign to End AIDS at the Positive Impact Health Center in Atlanta moderated by our Atlanta health reporter, Kenya Hunter. We’ll learn more about the disease, its impact on Black communities, and what can be done to protect yourself.
